Frequently Asked Questions

What is this website?

This is a site where students can buy or sell their university textbooks. For example, a student starting their second year may want to buy some books. By searching for the book on this site they can quickly locate a book from a third year who is selling the book they want. The same second year student may want to sell their first year books to the freshers. This can easily be done by clicking the “sell a book” button.

How do I buy a book?

Go to the Home page and search for the book you want. Add the book to cart. Once you’ve added all the books you want, click on the cart to checkout.

How do I sell a book?

Navigate to the Sell a Book page. Fill out the details, then click “List Book”.

What are the charges?

Buyers are not charged, they only pay for the book. Sellers are charged only for books that sell. UniBooks charges the seller 10% of the book price excluding postage. For example if a seller sells a book for £20, with £5 for postage then £2 is automatically deducted in fees. This happens automatically, the seller doesn’t have to worry about paying anything.

How do I pay for the book?

You pay using paypal. You must have a paypal account. You can create one here if you don’t already have one.

Do I have to post the book myself to the buyer?

If you are selling a book, you have the option to post the book, or hand over the book in person. You can choose one of these options, or be open to both (which we recommend). You choose from the Sell a Book page, when listing a book. The buyer then chooses to have the book posted or handed over in person, depending on which options you allow.

How much does postage cost?

It depends on the book size and service. Here are some prices from Royal Mail:

  • Small book (up to 1kg): £2.80-£8.55
  • Medium book (up to 2kg): £2.80-£11.00
  • Large book (up to 5kg): £12.98-£20.48

Check out this link for full details.

You could also use My Hermes. Here is a link:

  • Small book (up to 1kg): £2.78-£6.38
  • Medium book (up to 2kg): £3.78-£7.38

Can I collect books in person?

Yes, if the seller allows this function. There is a good chance they are studying at the same university, which makes things very convenient! On the book listing page, you will be able to see the delivery methods the seller allows. After adding the book to your cart, you will be able to choose the delivery method (from the cart or checkout page).

I don’t have PayPal how do I pay?

You need to create a PayPal account. This is for the security of members of UniBooks. You create one by clicking this link.

Is there a limit to the number of books I can sell or buy?

No, there is no limit.

How do I upload the image(s) of the book?

You can take a picture on your phone or tablet and upload it from there.

I received my books but they’re not in the condition I expected. What can I do?

The condition should have been clearly advertised by the seller. If this is not the case or the book was damaged in transit, you can contact the seller to issue a refund. If you do not get a response from the seller after 14 days, go to PayPal’s resolution centre. You can do this by going to PayPal’s website, logging in and clicking on the transaction where you bought the book, then clicking resolution centre at the bottom.
